Making a gift through your retirement assets

A gift of your retirement assets from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan is an excellent way to help our community for years to come.

If you’re like many people, you might not use all your retirement assets during your lifetime. Consider allocating the remainder to support community members who need it most.

By supporting DESC, donors contribute to a proven, compassionate and effective organization that is making a real difference in addressing homelessness and supporting the most vulnerable members of our community.

By making a planned gift through your retirement assets, you can help us continue providing essential services and support to those in need for generations to come.

These gifts can include retirement accounts such as 401(k), 403(b) or IRA; health savings accounts; donor-advised funds; brokerage accounts; and other financial accounts, including CDs, money market, savings and checking accounts, that allow for transfer on death (TOD) or payment on death (POD) designations.

Your financial accounts offer a flexible and cost-effective way to impact our programs and clients significantly.

By designating DESC as a beneficiary, you can make a meaningful difference.

Your pensions, retirement plans, or other financial accounts can be a practical way to support DESC and can even save you at tax time.

Typically, retirement plan balances are subject to both income and estate taxes. But because DESC is a nonprofit organization, we won’t pay income tax on the distribution, nor will the gift be subject to estate tax.

Your retirement assets may be transferred to DESC by completing a beneficiary designation form provided by your plan custodian.

Making a beneficiary designation

You have a variety of options for giving towards our clients and programs. Through a simple beneficiary designation form, you can add DESC as a beneficiary of any percent or amount you choose.

Another approach is to name DESC as secondary or contingent beneficiary in case someone you’re providing for can’t claim their portion.
